Our Training programme has two objectives: to upgrade and improve the skills of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers, and to develop the supervisory potential of promising skilled workers with a view to increasing Mathew's reserve of foremen and first line supervisors.
Mathew recognizes the importance of implementing its own training programme due to a number of interrelated factors.
Mathew wanted to create a large reserve pool of semi-skilled and skilled workers upon which it could draw at a moment' s notice to fulfill unexpected client needs. The existence of this manpower reserve pool would cut-down the lead-time taken to recruit and mobilize workers for overseas employment.
Mathew perceived the importance of upgrading and refining the construction skills of the Thai workers in order for them to meet the industry's international standards and requirements. This would also enable Mathew to complete favourably against other countries supplying cheaper, but less qualified, construction workers.
Mathew anticipated a shortfall of trained foremen and supervisors in the medium-term: in order to meet this unexpected vacuum, Mathew decided it was necessary to identify skilled workers with the potential to become foremen and supervisors by practical training and instilling a management attitude.
In general, a training course will take one to three months to complete, at the end of which the time, the worker is awarded a certificate of successful completion. During each training period, apart from upgrading his skills, the worker is taught the value of teamwork, cooperation and self-discipline.
